Matthew Santos on Allhiphop.com
If his name sounds familiar, it makes sense. Matthew Santos is the voice on Lupe Fiasco’s first Top 10 hit, “Superstar.” The Minneapolis native lent his flexible vocals to an R&B hook, but R&B is far from the appropriate word to describe the music he creates. “Just because you can sing R&B doesn’t make you an R&B singer. Just because I’ve had folk/rock songs doesn’t make me a folk/rock artist. I can sing blues and opera, but that doesn’t make you an opera singer.”

Kiss Blog Interview with Lupe Fiasco
Is there a danger five years down the line when rappers are multi-millionaires, they will be rapping about issues not close to them anymore?
"I think that there's a misconception that rappers get out from the hood. You become the vehicle for other people to get out. You still have to go pick them up physically from their concrete building and they might have a package of weed or a gun on them. That's how rappers get caught up.
I don't think that when you cross a certain bridge you start to hang around with different people. Your friends from the hood are the same killers, gang bangers, drug dealers as when you were twelve. You'll be surprised about how many rappers have to put [down] their real name to bail out their friends and family because they are still there."

Fan Reviews: Chicago May 24th Date
By Mendi
First of all I have to confess... all that talk of getting to the United Center by 6:30... unfortunately did not happen. I don't know why I can't do anything in a timely manner, no matter how hard I try, but this was another fine example. I got to the arena at straight up 7:00 or maybe a couple seconds after, and my roommate and I were litterally running to our section as Lupe Fiasco was singing "Hip-hop Saved my Life." So here begins the concert review!
I don't rememember the exact order of things, but I do know that Lupe introduced Nikki Jean, who is featured on Hip-hop Saved my Life. Get used to this folks because not only did Lupe put on a good show, but he definitely shared the spotlight with the people he works with, has signed to FNF, etc. As a matter of fact I know for sure the next song was Little Weapon, which features a verse from Bishop G. Then it might've been Kick Push but don't hold me to that. And then came Go Go Gadget Flow. Guess what? Yep, there was another feature on this! It's not this way on the album, but instead of Lupe going into the second verse of the song he brought out Gemstones, who was doing some of that midwest stype rapid fire rap, yes I love it, but I had to have a hater moment when he first came out and the mic wasn't working or maybe Gemstones wasn't close enough to it. I don't even know but I couldn't hear him really until about half way through the verse. Boo to that! Oh well, these things happen. Anyway, after this I think was Paris Tokyo, which featured Sarah Green on vocals. I believe it was after Paris Tokyo that Lupe brought out a group he has signed to FNF called He Say She Say. They have kind of an electronic sound. And the show ended with Streets are On Fire and Superstar, both featuring Mathew Santos, and the final song was Daydreamin'...

Spotlight on one of Chi-Towns best kept secrets...
MATRIXX.
The 18 year old rising star from the southside of Chicago isn't going anywhere anytime soon...
The 18 year old rising star from the southside of Chicago isn't going anywhere anytime soon...
So Matrixx how are you affiliated with FNF?
Well, that’s a long story kind of, but I’ll try to make it short as possible. When I was 15 or 16 I heard “Failure” by Lupe, and around the same time I created a myspace. By being on Lu’s page listening to his music, I ran across Mixmastermegan and me and her got real cool. Through Megan I met Rob Bates, and we got cool, and I met bishop G and Shayla G and I got cool with them, and then I met Danny Milk and one man gang, and we were like the first Lupe Fiasco support team on myspace that I knew about. I know the “Femmes” came up around that time too. Bishop G is kind of like my big brother through music, I use to send my lyrics over to him and he would give me advice on what I should work on and different things like that. It’s crazy talking to them now and seeing how far we came since then, and we actually kick it in real life, but it all started on myspace. Shout out to Tom.
Where did your stage name come from?
Well it actually didn’t come from doing music, it came from sports. I played football from when I was 10 through high school, and one game when I was in 8th grade a spectator said “He’s so fast, he makes everyone else look slow, like they’re in the matrix.” So I went around telling people I’d put them in the matrix, and my friends just started calling me that and it’s stuck till now. I added the extra X because of my homies over at Abstraxx Clothing. I just thought the extra X looked really dope. I wish I had a more interesting story that than, but that’s it (laughs).

So how long have you been rapping?
I started taking rapping seriously when I was 10, so it’s going on 9 years.
I started taking rapping seriously when I was 10, so it’s going on 9 years.
What makes Chicago stand out from other places and how did it make you who you are today?
Chicago as a city does not have a set style of music. We accept every style of music here, so I think what we do is combine all the aspects we like from what we listen to and tweak them until they work for us as artists. What’s happening now, and is new, is that people are helping each other. People are blowing up and coming back and grabbing their homies, which I personally think is something that we lacked for a long time, but I’m happy to see that happening now. One more thing is the originality we have. Every single artist wants to stand out, so we work even harder on not being like the rest of the artists out already. That’s how you have people that listen to Common, Kanye, and Lupe, and then turn around and listen to The Cool Kids, Mano, and Mic Terror. But, all those types still represent what we do in the Chi. I personally appreciate Chicago more now that I’ve been outside Chicago, there are no words to really explain it, but HOME IS HOME.

Where do you draw inspiration from?
My life, my family, and my city. I have such a strong passion for not only making music but the art in forming a song. I love the feeling of finishing the last lyric of a new song, or hearing a new beat I fall in love with. But other than that, I draw inspiration from life in general, the good and bad. I’d say 85-90% of my music is taken from my life experience, the other 10% I leave to write about topics that might not affect me personally, but I still know about.

Who inspires you now that is currently in the rap game?
My fellow Chicago artists like Kanye, Common, Lupe, The Cool Kids, Mic Terror, Hollywood Holt, Mano, Gemstones, Bishop G, Naledge from Kidz in the Hall and many more as well. Outside of Chicago I like N.E.R.D., Blu, Pacific Division, Gym Class Heroes, Outkast, Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, Eminem, Big L, The Roots, but honestly I got so many people on my list in the game that I think are great artists, so that list is really way too long. But outside of hip hop you have Paramore, James Horner, Linkin Park, Fall Out Boy, Cobra Starship, Justin Timberlake, Michael Jackson, and a lot more, but I don’t want to ramble.

So what makes YOU unique to the rap game today?
My age and my message make me unique. I’m here to let people in my age group and younger know that it’s cool to be yourself. It’s cool to listen to whatever type of music you like, it’s cool to dress how you like, it’s cool to express your thoughts in the form you’re comfortable using. I’m just here to break stereotypes and misconceptions on what not only black teenagers are, but what all teenagers are. Since I’m their peer, I think my words will have a bigger impact than someone older who is trying to lecture, because I’m really going through the same things they are. So that message with my age makes me unique, because I don’t see any other entertainers my age in the game that’s delivering that message. Plus I’m here to make dope music and nothing less.

What goals have you set for yourself?
My goals are high and low. All I really want is to make a living off my music, I just want to be financially stable enough to have a house, and a car, and a raise a family without having to work a 9-5 job. But, then I really want to see how far I can take my music, I want a Grammy and other awards and notoriety, but if I don’t get those things I won’t think less of my music because superstardom isn’t for everyone. But I set realistic goals, so as I come up in the game I’m sure my goals will start to change.

Do you have any last words you would like to leave us with?
As an up and coming artist the hardest thing to do is get people to pay attention to you, then after that it’s getting people to listen to you, those two things are very different. Then to take your career to the next level you need somebody “important” to co-sign you. I personally want to thank you guys for co-signing me, I definitely appreciate that. To everyone else, you will be seeing a lot more of me, so just get use to me because I’m definitely out here.

Do you have any shout-outs you'd like to give?
Renegades, The Story, Medina, Joe, Steel, Ski, Samantha, The City of Chicago, and thank you to everyone who supports me, its greatly appreciated because without any of you none of this is possible. PEACE IN FRESHNESS.

Gemstones Interview on SixShot.com
Let me ask you man, Lupe kind of gets put in that box with Kanye and Pharrell, that whole hipster, skateboarding thing. Do you feel you’re in that box as well?
They say if you wanna know where you’re going in life then look who you’re around. They say birds of a feather flock together. That’s who I roll with and that’s who I break bread with. I make similar music but when I drop the album I don’t know if that’s where they’ll put me. Not that that’s a bad place to sit because Kanye, Pharrell, and Lupe are all real successful. I would hope that they would sit me alone because I wanna be different. I wanna be left of everybody else. If they’re left then I wanna go right. I’m my own entity but I would be cool with a Kanye, Lupe, or Pharrell box.
Being signed to a successful artist in Lupe Fiasco, do you think you will get stuck in his shadow?
Nah not at all because I’m just as good as Lupe. For the most part when you have artists signed to other artists the main artist is the best artist. It’s like the artist plays Robin to the artist who signed them, like the Batman. With us it’s like a toss up. Some people might think Lupe is better than Stones and some people might think Stones is better than Lupe. I’m just not there yet but my talent holds just as much weight as Lupe’s. I compliment his style and he compliments mine. Talent wins in the end so when this mixtape drops and then the album sfter that people will see that I can hold my own.
The only two that did that before in my opinion was Jay and Beans. Remember around the Dynasty? There was a time when it was a toss up and some people thought Beans was better than Jay. That’s the only other situation like that that I can remember.
Thanks Mendi...We Look Forward to your Chicago Glow Recap
Fan Reviews: Glow Tour in Chicago
As told by my homie SGT TIBS. over at GOWHEREHIPHOP.COM (Check em' out the site is in our blog roll)
Lupe Fiasco kicked off the show with “The Coolest” over the “Let There Be Light” Justice beat, as expected and it was even sicker live! That got me right into it as he brought out the lovely Nikki Jean for “Hip-Hop Saved My Life” and “Little Weapon” with Bishop G gettin’ in his verse. The highlight of Lupe’s set was “Go Go Gadget Flow” as he sped through the Chicago-inspired hit at an even faster break-neck speed, dropping the beat for the 2nd verse and going a capella at like 1000 words per second it seemed. Haha, the crowd got really into it and fed off the energy from Lupe and his guests and that moment was just ridiculous. “Paris, Tokyo” took on an interesting sound as Sarah Green provided the chorus and a beautiful solo 2 conclude the song, wow. Her voice was booming! Lupe then introduced the Chicago electronic duo, He Say She Say, as they performed “Crash Dummie”. I loved it and was prolly one of 10 people in the UC who knew the words, but I hope others came away impressed. Matthew Santos was the next guest 2 arrive as Lupe & himself performed “Fighters” followed by “Superstar”, which the crowd went nuts for! And then Lupe fittingly ends his set with “Daydreamin’” as him and Bishop G just lost it on stage with Santos and Sarah Green providing some backup vocals...

Lupe reacts to MTV's Hottest MC's Nod
"Lupe was very vocal when he was left off last year's list — and didn't even receive an honorable mention. "Yeah, I went and found all of the individual board members and asked them what was up," Fiasco said. "It feels good, man. I used that as motivation. I took that as, 'Oh, OK. I'll be back.' And I came back with a vengeance. [The Cool] is gold. Smash record that was nine weeks at #1. The bells and whistles and everything that comes with it. So, you know, I'm happy. I'm happy. A Grammy that just came out of nowhere. It feels good, man, the work. So now I've got to find something else to motivate me again, so I can be the underdog. I like being the underdog. I like that. It feels like you've got something to achieve. You wake up in the morning with a purpose."

New Gemstones Interview on Hip Hop Game!
"Take us back a minute. How did you and Lupe initially link up?
Okay. I met Lupe way back in the beginning. I met Lupe back in 2000 or 2001. I did a studio session at this studio in Chicago. This was before he was really big. I was still Gemini. We were at a little hole-in-the-wall studio with my friend waiting to do a song. They wouldn’t let me start because Lupe had to finish his song and they said he was about to sign with Jay-Z and Rocafella. So I’m in the session and we were waiting for three hours.
Finally Lupe comes through the door. I was anxious at the time and I was thinking that I was the best rapper. Stack Bundles also walked by. He was signed to First and 15th at the time and he was Lupe’s first artist. God bless his soul. So him and Stack Bundles walk through the door. Lupe never recorded his verse but we had a big cipher. We went at it for like an hour. We were just throwing monster verses out and at the end of the session, Lupe asked us if we wanted to hear his album. Nobody really knows who Lupe is except for his guy George. He played us his album and it was all bangers. I didn’t know how to make songs at that point. I just knew how to rap. I didn’t know how to write 16’s. Lupe had songs and they were really good. He was name-dropping Eminem and Dr. Dre, saying that they were supposed to be working on the album and I believed him. You could hear it in his music that he wasn’t faking it. And you could also see it in the car that he was driving and the jewelry that he was wearing.
He was who I was trying to be. I just needed someone who was already on that. So we exchanged numbers and the rest is history. He heard what I do and he signed me. He brought me around everyone at the label. They had me rapping against a gang of dudes and I was running through everybody that they threw up against me. And then I started singing. I hit them with all of these songs and they was blown away. Before you know it I was signed. I was recording my album and I knew how to write songs. We formed a friendship and we’ve just been going hard ever since we met.
And actually, when I first met Lu, he told me he wasn’t actually looking to sign any artists. He had heard me the night we met. He heard me that night but he didn’t see my full potential, so I had to prove myself. So when I got up with him, he told me he would listen but he wasn’t going to sign anyone. That wasn’t enough for me and I wasn’t trying to hear that. I heard that at plenty of job interviews, like they’ll look over my application and call me. I knew what that was about and there were plenty of jobs that I didn’t get and I wasn’t going to have that. I ultimately made my way. If there is no way, I’ll make a way.
I had to get up with those guys a second time and when I did, I knew it was either go hard or go home. I pulled all types of raps out the hat. I went hard. I went hard. And then I told him that I didn’t even want to sign. I told him that I wanted to sign, but that I wanted to sit back for a year or two and just learn the game and just soak it up and then when I was ready, I would sharpen my knife and let it out the draw. I told them that I wasn’t ready and that they couldn’t put me out yet. He respected it and the next time he heard me rap I went hard and they were blown away. They saw me and knew that I was that dude. They knew that my pen game and my songwriting game was sick and that my vocals were sick. They knew I was lyrically sick and that I was a monster. They knew they could mold me into something crazy and that’s what they did. They got me in the studio. There were producers giving me beats and I just grew. I started following Lupe and he started complimenting my style and I just got better and better and better and better. And before you knew it I was doing shows."

Why He's Hot
With swagger that lays somewhere between dope-boy fresh and Louis-Viutton-Don dapper, "He spat the poems that got their domes all geeked up." Did Lupe have a legitimate gripe about being totally ignored by the Brain Trust during last year's list and subsequent sidebar convos? Absolutely. Did the trustees tell the world that their list was neither perfect nor definitive? Absolutely. Nevertheless, Lupe made it impossible to overlook him this time (and not just because of the support he's getting from his peers). A little less arcane and definitely darker than 2006's Food and Liquor, his The Cool LP borders on classic contention. His blatant sarcasm didn't sacrifice his lyrical legerdemain on "Dumb It Down." The articulation of emotion and attention to detail on "Hip-Hop Saved My Life" makes the song easily one of 2008's most cherished, and the ample airplay for "Superstar" and many weeks as Billboard's top rap record re-established Lu's nascent star power.CLICK HERE to check the entire list

Meet Nee...
1) The first time i fell in love with lupe was when i first saw the KICK PUSH music video on BET. I had never heard the song on the radio before hand so i was totally unawhere of the song and him as an artist. The thing that sparked my interest in him was the fact that I had never heard a Hip/Hop song like it before. SKATEBOARDING?! He was obviously a lot different from the other Hip/Hop artist on BET and the song was sick as hell! "I LIKE DIS DUDE!" At the end of the video when his name flashed on screen i read to myself: "Lupe Fiasco? Hmm, is he puerto rican" LOL! but seriously, even his named sounded interesting to me. So, I googled him, read some articles and watched some interviews on youtube(I found out he wasn't puerto rican LOL). I saw what kinda dude he was and how he didn't hide how he was deep into japanese anime, comic books, toysand his versitile musical interest! So the realness got me!
2) LOL I don't think I'd even have the guts to steal anything from him but im gonna pretend for a moment that im this "crazy lupe stalker". I'd most likley steal one of his wee ninjas! I really wanna have one hangin on my jeans too!
Well, to give u some info on ya gurl Nee': Im fun and crazy most of the time and will say random things a lot LOL. I've been described as an "animated person". I like to read but Listening to music is my fav pastime. my fav color is blue. I may be female but pink is my least fav color. My fav music artists besides Lupe is Lauryn Hill (beautiful, talented sista), Coldplay, No Doubt, Beyonce', Jay Z, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Amy Winehouse, Kanye West, Janet Jackson and of course Michael (the "KANG OF POP"). My fav author is Mary Monroe. My fav NBA player is Kevin Garnett! My fav artist, as in paint and drawings, is Justin Bua (artwork is oozin' with that urban vibe) So u can check out my page at www.myspace.com/eenaj THANX! HOPE I WIN!
Hey Nee...LMAO @ "crazy lupe stalker" I think we all would like a wee ninja!!! Oh, and kudos on your music taste (Kaycee would especially appreciate your love for Michael Jackson!! And thanks for reading the blog!!!!

Matthew Santos Interviews
The Real Chicago
The Real Chicago Magazine May Issue w/ Matthew Santos
The Real Chicago Magazine ran their interview with Matthew Santos in the May issue printed and distributed over the weekend on page six, so the story is available in bars and restaurants in and around the Chicagoland area.
Here is the article below:
The Real Chicago May 2008
Meet Matthew Santos
Touring with Lupe Fiasco and Kanye West, Santos stays grounded at Martyr's May 22
By Dan Ochwat
This month, Santos, a mohawked vocal wonder, will play two shows, May 23 and 24 at the Allstate Arena, singing with Lupe Fiasco as an opening act on Kanye West's Glow in the Dark tour, a speck on an arena-glitz-and-glamour, 50-date tour before screaming teens. Conversely, he'll play Martyr's on May 22, the center of attention for an intimate, folkie crowd.
Such is the life of Santos, playing music in two different worlds. Santos, a Wicker Park resident, at least one month out of every six when he's not touring, has been signed to Lupe Fiasco's record label. An album to come, he's sung on both of Lupe's genre-bending albums, and with Phil Collins and Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas. He's received praise from Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z, and you can see him at Martyr's.
Santos spoke over the phone from Los Angeles. His albums are available on iTunes, and he's ramping up his MySpace page with blogs and pics from the tour. (http://www.myspace.com/matthewsantos).
Q:
I read that you met Lupe through a mutual friend. You sure you don't have a sexier story than that?
A:
Well, we met at a burrito house. Our story isn't too glamorous. Really, it's more of a
coincidental matching. It fell into my lap. It came at the perfect time.
Q:
Was he looking for a singer?
A:
Not really. He was doing his thing, doing mix tapes and putting them on the internet, and I was working with our mutual friend, Greg Magers, who is an amazing sound engineer out of Chicago. He's also known as G Ball. He's both of our sound engineers. G Ball gave him my stuff, and he dug it.

Lupe Fiasco's Inspirations
This is old but its interesting...
"The rapper talked to MTV News about songs, people and places that have influenced his music…
When MTV spoke to Lupe Fiasco for a special online interview we thought we’d explore the influences and inspirations behind his excellent second album The Cool.
WATCH LUPE FIASCO VIDEOS
See what the Chicago MC revealed below…
The Concept Album:
I took that idea from a song I did on the last album (Food and Liquor) called The Cool it’s about someone who comes back from the grave. I had to put him in a story line because I’m a writer first- rapper second.
I used the characters as vessels for things I couldn’t talk about (as myself). It was better for stuff to come from the first person.
The Story
When ever I play with the story I imagine it as animation as Japanese anime or like The Matrix. The Game (character) is inspired by Frankenstein and a lot of the sub-stories some from watching a lot of psychological thrillers and Steven King films.
The Cool Continues
This gives you more things to do out side of the album with marketing and presentation. I was more inspired by movies than other music when coming up with these characters and the stories.
Now I can do toys- It’s a creative franchise as well as an album
Music
As a teen I listened to Nas, a lot of West Coast rappers like Snoop Dogg-then it was Wu Tang and Mobb Deep. It hasn’t changed. I listen to a bit of everybody on the hip hop side.
Now I listen to stuff I missed when I was growing up in the hood like techno and rock.
Famous Friends
I met Kanye before he was famous so I watched him become a celebrity. We are jumping off with CRS (Lupe/Pharrel and Kanye’s group) on the Glow In The Dark tour in the US. There’s more coming!
Jay-Z was one of the earliest people I got to meet and do business with. It was a shock to see that Jay-Z answered his own door! I knocked on the doorand it was him.
I met Snoop (who features on his track High Definition) at a show for Pharrell (Williams- another friend) and it was a weird situation.
He was driving a truck with Warren G in the passenger seat and called me over. That was so cool – I was starstruck.
UK Artists
I’m a big Thom Yorke fan more than a Radiohead fan. I was listening to the radio and heard The Eraser (which CRS remixed as US Placers) so I went back and got all his stuff.
I love Unkle too. I was working closely with some of James Lavelle’s associates and I was a fan so I reached out. I said I want to do a song with Unkle and I have (Hello Goodbye on The Cool).
From the UK I like Sway and Estelle up to people like Ian Brown. I’m a big Ian Brown fan- FEAR is one of my favourite songs of all time. I always find myself discovering new rock or techno when I’m in the UK."
